BERKHAMSTED CASTLE

There, Saxon barons and bishops swore allegiance to him. William was crowned the King of England in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066

Edward the Black Prince honeymooned at Berkhamsted Castle with Joan, the Fair Maid of Kent.

In 1066, William, Duke of Normandy, invaded England, defeated King Harold at the Battle of Hastings, and marched inland to Berkhamsted.

He granted the Manor of Berkhamsted to his half-brother, Robert Count of Mortain, who errected a castle as a defence against rebellious subjects.
