~ Chepstow Castle ~**********************************************************************************
The ruins of Chepstow Castle have a spectacular setting on cliffs over the River Wye. This powerful defensive position can best be seen from several points on the English side of the river. These are the remains of one of the earliest stone-built castles in Britain - the centre of the medieval Marcher lordship of Chepstow. Building commenced the year after the Battle of Hastings in 1067. The castle was modified and developed in successive stages throughout the Middle Ages and saw further action during and after the Civil War. Chepstow Castle doubled as the ruined Castle de Belleme in the RoS episode "The Enchantment", and its upper bailey, barbicon and courtyard featured as Caerleon Castle in the episode "The Inheritance". | |
