At age fifty, David, Earl of Huntingdon, becomes keenly aware of his own mortality. Stubborn, blinkered, misguided, and somewhat selfish, the fact that he has no direct legitimate heir troubles him deeply - and so he decides to do something about it.

Finding that his resulting actions lock Robert into painful unyielding conflict with him, David demands obediance from Robert.  And if he does not get that obediance, then he will resort to violence to bring his equally stubborn son to heel...
